In my last video I talked about the importance of being specific about who we worship. We say, “we worship God, the creator of heaven and earth” or, “we worship Jesus, the one in the Bible.” The reason for that is because people have many gods, and, they have created a god in their own image. They have taken some of the characteristics of the Creator of heaven and earth but have mixed in their own ideas and views.

For example, today people believe that “God wants people to be good, nice, and fair to each other, as taught in the Bible and by most world religions. Is that all God wants us to do? Is this what the Bible and Christianity all about? More importantly, is this what life with God all about? No! God not only wants us to be good, nice, and fair to each other, He wants us to love one another as He has loved us.

Love takes being good, nice, and fair to each other to a new level. Before we go further, we need to define love. The Apostle Paul tells us in 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 what love is all about, “4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.”

Yes, we can and should be good, nice, and fair to each other, but God calls us to love one another. This means to put the needs of others above our needs; to care about the other person even when that person doesn’t care about you. That is what God wants us to do. But that is not the only thing.

Before loving our neighbors, Jesus said to love the Lord your God. Christianity and our faith in God is not just about being good, nice and fair to each other. Christianity is about loving “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ 31 The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.” Mark 12:30

This is what believing in God the maker of heaven and earth is all about. This is what the Bible teaches us, and this is God desire for us as His creation.

I encourage you to love your neighbor the way God loves you. And God demonstrated His love for you by sending Jesus into our world, to take our place on that cross so that you and I would not be condemned but have forgiveness of sins, life and salvation. This is the kind of love God wants us to show our neighbors.
